Humanitarian Award Recipients

Each year, Sanford Institute of Philanthropy recognizes a nonprofit leader who inspires us to put community first through their outstanding leadership, generosity of spirit, and demonstrated commitment to giving back to the community through philanthropy.

Malin Burnham

Burnham is a recipient of the Sanford Institute of Philanthropy Humanitarian Award. His extensive community involvement includes bringing the America’s Cup races, the USS Midway Museum, and the U.S. Olympic Training Center to San Diego County. He has also served on the boards of numerous major corporations and firms, chaired a variety of nonprofits and co-founded more than a dozen organizations.

T. Denny Sanford

The founder of the Sanford Education Center at National University, Sanford has supported many causes ranging from helping sick, disadvantaged, abused or neglected children to a variety of health-related research organizations that seek to cure life-threatening diseases such as cancer and diabetes. To date, he has given more than a billion dollars to nonprofit organizations in the U.S. and around the world.

Conrad Prebys

A noted philanthropist and entrepreneur, Prebys’ many contributions to the San Diego community have included capital and operating gifts to the Boys and Girls Clubs of East County, the San Diego Zoo, the San Diego Opera, the Old Globe Theatre, UCSD Music Centre, the La Jolla Music Society, Scripps Mercy Hospital, Sanford/Burnham/Prebys Medical Research Institute in San Diego and Orlando Florida, the Salk Institute and San Diego Hospice.
